Living in the modern world could be great for many reasons. One of them is that we have automobiles. Even more so that now we can leave those days behind when we wondered what is the most efficient way and route to get from point A to point B. This is, in part, thanks to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. However, often when we have problems with our car’s windshield, and we need to have it replaced, we also need to recalibrate our ADAS. But why is this so important?

First of all, we need to see what ADAS actually is. Many experts define ADAS as a group of safety features that include a variety of sensors located throughout your car, and some of them are behind your windshield. Thanks to these sensors, we can gather important information and optimize our driving.

One of the main purposes of ADAS is to minimize or prevent the negative impacts of unfortunate events such as collisions. The system does this through a series of audio and visual alerts. There can be many ADAS features installed in a car, but the most common ones include:

ADAS Calibration

One of the main features of ADAS is the front-facing camera which is installed behind the windshield and in order for ADAS to work properly, this camera also needs to be in working order.

Without being sure that the camera is working properly, the ADAS won’t be able to do its job the way it is supposed to and this can be a serious safety risk. It doesn’t require much for these sensors to stop working properly.

When you are in imminent danger, in order to take the necessary action e.g. stop the car, you need to be alerted early. But if the ADAS isn’t working properly, the signals and alerts can be delayed and you might not be able to stop the vehicle on time. So it’s important to calibrate the windshield.

You as the driver, aren’t the only ones at risk here. Other drivers or your passengers can also be in danger if your ADAS isn’t working the way it should.

What Type of ADAS Calibration Can You Do?

Generally speaking, there are two types of ADAS calibration that you can do on your windshield and this is mostly determined by the type of car you have. So you can have Static ADAS Calibration and Dynamic ADAS Calibration.

With static ADAS calibration, you will need to pay a visit to a certified auto glass repair shop, because this type of calibration requires an enclosed environment and special equipment. And since you’re already driving there, you might as well do any repairs or replacements on your auto glass, if there are any.

On the other hand, dynamic ADAS calibration is done on the open road and it is more user-friendly. You simply attach a hand-held unit into your car, drive at a predetermined speed for a certain distance and your sensors will be calibrated.

ADAS is a piece of technological advancement in the automobile industry that should make our lives easier and driving safer. But in order to for it to function properly, it needs to be set up the right way and if necessary, calibrated. So in case your windshield gets damaged and you’re in for a repair OR it is damaged beyond repair and you need to have it replaced, make sure that you ask your auto glass shop if they can also perform ADAS calibration.
